Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Date – Watch Advice

One of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s signature timepieces, the Memovox Polaris, now with the recent addition of the date feature gets an updated look with a brand new colour dial. Since the creation of the first model back in 1968, the Memovox Polaris has had consistent progress and update, implementing itself as the sporty-elegant timepiece in the brand’s collection of watches.

When thinking of the Memovox Polaris, what’s immediately noticeable is the vintage-inspired design, the iconic gradient sunburst dial, and of course the mobile inner bezel. A mix of the old with new, the Memovox Polaris is a versatile timepiece that can be worn for business or outdoor events.

Drawing inspiration from the original 1968 Memovox Polaris, in 2018 the Polaris Date was released. The Polaris Date quickly became one of the more popular Polaris timepieces of the time, which had an appealing design combing with vintage touches and vanilla luminescent coating. In 2021, the Polaris Mariner date was released, in a beautiful gradient blue dial. Watchadvice reviewed this timepiece, which you can find here (https://www.watchadvice.com.au/8242/2021-jaeger-lecoultre-polaris-mariner-date-review/). Now, Jaeger-LeCoultre is updating the Polaris Date model again, this time with a luscious gradient deep green dial.

The latest Polaris Date comes in a 42mm stainless steel case with satin-finished surfaces, and polished chamfers on the lugs and bezel giving a subtle yet luxurious finish. The subdued appearance of the case allows the full depth of the dial to be seen, which is the main focus of this timepiece. The Polaris Date comes with a lacquered double-gradient dial that has multiple textured finishes. This allows for a stark contrast between the dial background and the hand and hour indices.

For each key segment on the dial from the mobile inner bezel ring to the minute track, there is a variety of finishes that include opaline, grained, and sunray finishes. The deep green colour on the dial has a gradient that ranges from light olive to verdant rainforest, which also shows different shades depending on the angle of the light. The final touch to the dial is the translucent lacquer that is applied, which adds depth to the dial.

The hour indices on the dial are vanilla-tinted, which differs from the hands and closely matches the olive shade of the background. This however lets the hands stand out, providing crystal clear legibility. The addition of the date feature to the Polaris can be seen at the 3 o’clock position, which is sized just right to not interfere with the dial and its proportions.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has given the Polaris Date their latest movement the Calibre 899. The Calibre 899 movement operates at a frequency of 28, 800 VpH and can give out a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. The Polaris Date features a transparent case-back which, with most of the movement being covered, still allows the viewer to see the beautiful finishing of the Calibre 899 movement.

Jaeger-LeCoultre offers an olive green coloured rubber strap as standard for this latest Polaris Date, and it matches nicely with the green tones of the dial. The use of a rubber strap as a standard further enhances the appeal of this watch to be worn on outdoor adventures. If however, you would rather wear it on a daily and want to add more of a personal touch to the watch, the rubber strap can be quickly swapped out to a strap of choice thanks to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s quick-change system.

A deep green update to appeal to adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts, the latest Polaris Date is certainly a refreshing change in appearance from the standard blue and black that is offered for previous Polaris models. The Polaris Date is a boutique-only edition, however, will be available on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s online website for a month.
